004 / About

By an astrophotographer, for astrophotographers.

Built by founder Tom McCrorie (Astrotomony) after years of watching mainstream platforms crush the images he and his friends worked all night to capture.

What is Picastro?

Picastro is a dedicated social app for astronomy and astrophotography. It gives space enthusiasts, amateur astronomers and astrophotographers a place to share high-resolution images of the night sky, discover inspiring work from others, and learn exactly how each image was captured.

Unlike general social media platforms, Picastro is built entirely around space. Every image, every conversation, and every feature is designed for people who care about deep-sky objects, planets, the Moon — and the craft of astrophotography itself.

View capture details through StarCards®, discover the equipment behind an image, follow other astrophotographers, save favourites, and become part of a focused, welcoming community. Available on iPhone, Android and via the desktop web uploader.

Our four core principles

01

A safe, supportive space

No pressure of likes and follow counts. Picastro rewards praise and support, not vanity metrics.

02

Full-resolution sharing

Picastro does not compromise on quality. Up to 120 MB / 72 MP per image — your processing work stays visible.

03

Every level welcome

From a first shot of the Moon to dozens of hours on faint nebulae — everyone shares, everyone learns.

04

Image protection as standard

In-app screenshotting and screen recording are disabled so your captures can't be lifted and reposted.

With thanks

Picastro exists thanks to a development team, a small army of beta testers and cyber experts, and my family who put up with the late and sleepless nights. A particular thank you to Vlad, Hannah, Nici, Andy, Drew, Daniel M, Daniel D, Vicky, Simone — and one person who prefers to stay in the shadows, without whom the app would not be where it is today.
